7 Old Maps That Put World History in a New Light

Ptolemaic Map (circa 150 AD)

Created by Claudius Ptolemy, an ancient Greek mathematician, astronomer, and geographer, this map is one of the earliest known world maps.

Tabula Rogeriana (1154)

Created by the Muslim geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi for King Roger II of Sicily, this map represents the known world in the 12th century. 

Mappa Mundi (circa 1300)

Housed in Hereford Cathedral, this medieval mappa mundi is a unique depiction of the world in the 14th century. 

Catalan Atlas (1375)

This is a world map created by the Jewish cartographer Abraham Cresques in the Majorcan cartographic school. 

Waldseemüller Map (1507)

 This map, created by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller, is notable for being one of the first to use the name "America" to refer to the New World, honoring the explorer Amerigo Vespucci.

Mercator Projection (1569)

Created by Gerardus Mercator, this map was significant for its navigational utility.

Fra Mauro Map (1450s)

Created by the Venetian monk Fra Mauro, this map is a detailed representation of the world as known in the mid-15th century.
